Employers across the region have been warned to start their Olympic training early by city based solicitors Roythornes.

Solicitor Maz Dannourah today warned employers that whilst the Olympics were still 170 days away, issues would soon start to be raised for which they must be prepared.

He said that as well as the obvious problems of staff wanting to book the same time off to spectate or volunteer at the games, there are a number of other potential workplace issues.

“For example, employers need to be aware that some staff may want to watch some of the events live over the internet whilst working and it may therefore be wise to remind staff of employer’s internet usage at work policy. On the other hand, it’s an opportunity for employers to bring a social element to the workplace, with some planning to hire large screen televisions so that staff can watch the games together.”

Maz went on to say that employers needed to put the work in now so that as and when the issues arise everyone knows where they stand. He also made the point that not everyone was excited by the prospect of the Olympics.

“Of course, there will be people with no interest whatsoever in the games, and employers need to be aware of not causing them to feel left out or unfairly treated. At the end of the day it is about planning ahead and communicating the rules well in advance to your staff. Like an Olympic team – the more preparation you do the more successful you will be!”
