Tickets: £10 adults, £8 concessions, £7 for Vivacity Heritage pass holders

In the year of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee, discover how our current queen’s ancestors lived and ruled in a fascinating and entertaining illustrated talk from historian and broadcaster Dr Janina Ramirez, based on her recent, highly acclaimed BBC4 series. Learn how looking at medieval art and manuscripts reveal the stories behind English royalty from the Anglo Saxons to Henry VIII. The talk will look at how their manuscripts tell us about how our medieval monarchs ruled, as well as their personal lives and even some early royal scandals!

The talk will also consider how Peterborough was important for the production of medieval manuscripts – many surviving examples made at the abbey (today Peterborough Cathedral) are amongst the finest of their kind. It will also reveal tales of happened during some of the many royal visits to the city in the Middle Ages.

Dr Janina Ramirez studied Old and Middle English at St Anne’s College, Oxford, before completing her PhD at the School of Medieval Studies at the University of York. She currently lectures in Art History at Oxford University. Since 2010 she has presented a number of documentary series for BBC2 and BBC4 including ‘Treasures of the Anglo Saxons’, ‘The Viking Sagas’, ‘Britain’s Most Fragile Treasure’ and most recently ‘Illuminations: the Private Lives of Medieval Kings’.
