THESE three are hoping to be the future of accountancy in Peterborough having secured places on the trainee scheme at leading firm Rawlinsons.
Beth Barwell, Josh Tenney and Alix O’Donovan are Rawlinsons class of 2012 and are now settling into not only working at the firm on Lincoln Road but studying towards their accountancy qualifications.
For former Stamford High School pupil Beth, her career choice was an easy one. “I did work experience at a bank and in a finance department and really enjoyed it,” she said. Realising the financial commitment involved in going to university, like several of her friends, she sought out opportunities that would allow her to work while studying. She is set to launch into a five year study programme later this month with the aim of becoming a Chartered Accountant.
Her fellow trainees Josh and Alix are both university graduates, now embarking on a three year qualification programme.
Unsure of what career path to take post- A’ level, Alix embarked on a history degree at the University of East Anglia. Having spent holidays working in a cash office and discovering a talent for figures she is delighted to have landed a role at Rawlinsons. She said: “I’m settling in well and have already been out with colleagues to see clients.”
Josh has a proven head for figures having completed a maths degree at York
University. “The majority of people who do a maths degree become either a teacher or an accountant and there was no way I was going to be a teacher!” he said. A former Arthur Mellows Village College pupil, Josh knew Rawlinsons by reputation and is pleased to have found a position with a ‘local firm with family values’.
Rawlinsons’ trainee scheme is well established. A number of the firm’s current partners started their career as trainees and have worked their way up the ranks.
Associate Tracey Richardson said: “Through the scheme, Rawlinsons makes an on going commitment to the training of the next generation of accountants. Beth, Josh and Alix are exactly the kind of trainees we look for – they are ambitious, have excellent numeracy skills and the commitment to study alongside working. We are very much looking forward to helping them develop their skills and work towards becoming fully-fledged accountants.”
