Peterborough Sports Aid is delighted to announce it’s 2015 programme of lunches with international sports stars as guest speakers, to raise funds to support talented young sports people from the city with potential to achieve great things in the future.
The events, held at the Holiday Inn, Peterborough West run from
- Friday 24th April, 12.00pm – 3.00pm
- Friday 10th July 2015
- Friday 4th December 2015.
The speaker on 10th July is former England Cricketer, and National Cricket Selector Geoff Miller, and then for the 4th December event international skier and now BBC Ski Sunday presenter Graham Bell. Our first speaker on 24th April 2015 is retired British Swimmer and now media man Mark Foster.
A young Foster became the fastest swimmer in the country at only 15 years old, the start of what would be a fruitful and successful career. First selected for the British team in 1985, Foster won his first medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games where he claimed Bronze in the 50m freestyle. Foster went on to prove successful at World and European Championships, however an Olympic medal was to elude an otherwise illustrious career. Controversially missing out on selection for Athens 2004, Foster came out of retirement to try and reach his Olympic ambitions at the Beijing games. Named flag bearer for the opening ceremony, Foster was unable to succeed in China and returned empty handed despite winning the 2008 FINA Short Course World Championships prior to the games.
Retirement has bought a multitude of opportunities Mark Foster’s way, including much charity work, after dinner speaking and media commitments foremost amongst which is as part of the BBC sports coverage, especially for swimming. He has also appeared on a wide range of television shows, including ‘Strictly Come Dancing’.
Additionally there will be a black tie evening do on Friday 11th September 2015 in advance of the Rugby World Cup with former England and British Lion Rory Underwood.
