An introduction form Dr Javaid Butt, Anglia Ruskin University
The GrowIn 4.0 project is assembling, testing and developing business tools and solutions to make it easier for manufacturing small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) to transition to Industry 4.0. Click here to read more about the challenges and opportunities for SMEs in the region here.
The tools have been developed and the Future Peterborough team, run jointly by Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council, have joined the project to support business engagement activity, and testing the toolkits in real, working environments.
Industry 4.0 offers substantial opportunities for manufacturing SMEs to increase productivity and growth through computing and automation will transform business processes and systems in ways that are difficult to predict.
What is Industry 4.0?
Industry 4.0 is the use of technologies such as automation and data exchange in manufacturing. Examples include:
This project is developing new business models and processes to help SMEs increase efficiency and improve competitiveness as they move towards Industry 4.0. Working alongside SMEs, GrowIn 4.0 will improve skills and competencies to raise innovation levels, combining knowledge and new approaches so that these new systems deliver maximum value for businesses in the area.
In total there are 17 partners from six regions: the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway.
The project began in summer 2017 and will run for three years, with a total of 1.8m euros worth of funding from the Interreg North Sea Region (2017-2020). It will establish strong partnerships through which the main challenges and solutions of implementing and exploring Industry 4.0 will be investigated. The results of these new or improved methods and tools will be applied within different areas of the North Sea Region.
