Peterborough employers and residents affected by the Covid pandemic have received a welcome boost for their future thanks to the city’s two major colleges.
City College Peterborough and Peterborough College have joined forces to create New Start, a series of support programmes designed specifically for people looking for work, at risk of redundancy, furloughed or individuals who simply wish to improve their career prospects.
The aim of the New Start programme is to support individuals throughout their journey with a menu of initiatives to help them to return to the workplace with new skills and confidence and improve their general wellbeing.
The New Start programme offers individuals and businesses a range of options to choose from. These include CV workshops and careers and signposting advice, free courses to improve English, maths and computer skills and a range of vocational qualification opportunities to meet the needs of the local skills shortages such as care, teaching and learning support and general business skills.
Most of the courses are free and have been designed to be delivered online or through blended learning, a mix of online and classroom sessions.
Janet Bristow, Deputy Principal at City College Peterborough said “Job searching can be a daunting task for many people during normal circumstances, but the global pandemic has made the process even more challenging for people who are unable to get out and about to look for work, support and training opportunities.
We are working with Peterborough College to offer a one–stop shop to enable people to get information and advice, whether they’re just looking for signposting to local opportunities to upskill or reskill or need more specialist support to identify their existing and transferable skills and experience in order to create an individual learning and employment pathway that’s right for them.”
City College Peterborough and Peterborough College have a long-standing reputation for helping employers recruit the right people with the skills they need for their business.
Many businesses across the city have had to close their doors during the lockdown or evolve their business to meet the changing market needs. This period also presents opportunities for employers to reassess the skills they need to support their businesses going forward.”
The New Start programmes include:
- CV writing workshops and 1-2-1 meetings with experienced National Careers Advisors
- Workshops to help people prepare for the workplace
- Free Level 1 and 2 programmes in Care, Childcare, Teaching and Support Workers and Business Skills
- Free English language, maths and computer courses
- Adult apprenticeships in a range of business areas
- Care Academy to support you taking the first steps into a career in care, with an introduction qualification in Adult Care and 15 standards of the Care certificate.
