Company name: Little Bird Hair Design, run by Jill Hendry
Which stage are you at with your business? Registered 1-3 years
What does your business do? Hairdresser, Barber, Wedding Hair Specialist
What’s spurred you into starting your own business?
I’d wanted to be a hairdresser since the age of 16. I went back to college aged 45 and retrained. I set a goal to have my own salon by the time I was 50 and opened it on the weekend of my 50th Birthday.
How did you come up with your business idea?
I knew I didn’t want to be mobile so I looked for a small unit to set up a boutique salon. People love the tranquility of the space as opposed to big busy salons. I offer all aspects of hairdressing and barbering on site and travel for wedding hair
How has Startup Peterborough helped your planning / business so far?
I learn something new with each course I attend. The course has made me feel more confident in my abilities as a business owner and has offered lots of help and advice.
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve overcome (or are overcoming) in setting up and running your own company?
I opened in October 2019 and COVID hit in March 2020. Keeping the salon going and growing my client base has been a challenge.
What’s been the most rewarding aspect of setting up your business?
Absolutely everything. The highs and the lows. Client reviews are amazing and being nominated for a Peterborough Small Business Award was amazing! I’m looking forward to taking on an apprentice and expanding into bigger premises soon. I’m also continuing my personal development with an Assessors Course at Peterborough College.
